NEW IPL BIKINI PRO CAMBRIA CARDONA CRUSHES IT IN CALI!
Interview By Ben Yosef | Michael Brooks Photography
Twenty-two year old, first time competitor, Cambria Cardona was surely one of the most exciting competitors at the 2018 3rd Annual IPL California Championship on May 5th in Sacramento, CA.
Entering three classes in Cali, Cambria seemed as ubiquitous as the font bearing the same name. Simply put, Cardona DOMINATED the Bikini division. Here is what she took: Bikini Novice (Class A) = 1st Place + Overall Novice. Bikini Open (Class A) = 1st Place + Pro Card + Overall Open. Then, it was on to the Sports Model division, where Cambria killed it in Novice.
Many were shocked when Cardona did not appear in the Open class, as she surely would have posed a serious threat in that class as well. Needless to say, it was Cardona for the win in Women’s Sports Model Novice. Many believe that, with what Cambria Cardona is bringing to the stage, she is ready to battle it out at the Pro level with Pros like Rebecca Unruh, Kristen Perez, Sunny Miller, Wassana Moore and Tabetha Hernandez. And, even push Pro Champions like Elli Sigala and Tawnya Cline.
“EVERY TIME I SEE FRIENDS OR FAMILY MEMBERS WHO HAVE HEARD THE NEWS, THEY’LL BE LIKE ‘CONGRATS ON THE WIN!’ AND THE EXCITEMENT STARTS UP AGAIN.”
BEN YOSEF: Cambria! Congrats on killin’ it in Cali! You were incredible! And, congrats on landing this badass cover! Have you come down from the high of all this yet? [laughs]
CAMBRIA CARDONA: Thank you so much! It amazes me every time I look at it. I still can’t believe I’m going to be on the cover of a magazine! Sometimes it’s hard for me to believe that that’s me in the picture. [laughs] My parents actually put the picture on a cake for my birthday and printed out copies and had me sign them to give out to my friends and family.
As you can tell, they were especially excited for this. -laughs- I think I’ve officially come down from the high, but every time I see friends or family members who have heard the news, they’ll be like “Congrats on the win!” And the excitement starts up again.
BEN: That is so awesome! I love it! Yes, you are officially rock star status! So, you totally dominated the Bikini division at this show. You like won everything! Considering this was your first show ever, makes it even more amazing. What made you decide to enter this world of competing?
CAMBRIA: It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do, but never knew exactly where to start. When my best friend had entered her first IPL competition back in May of 2017, she would tell me all the things she had to do to prepare for it, like the hard core dieting and the early morning workouts everyday. I was just amazed at the whole process. But, I never thought that I was capable of doing something like that because I wasn’t as serious about fitness as I wanted to be and I just loved food too much. [laughs]
“IT HAS HELPED ME GROW IN SO MANY WAYS AND HELPED ME
PROVE TO MYSELF THAT, AS A WOMAN, I AM CAPABLE OF ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING.”
But, then that’s when my coach Lorelie reached out to me and asked me to join her team. I knew that in order to do this I would have to give up a lot. But, it was definitely all worth it in the end and I am so glad I put aside all my insecurities and decided to go through with this competition. It has helped me grow in so many ways and helped me prove to myself that, as a woman, I am capable of anything and everything.
BEN: Insecurities? What insecurities? You liked totally owned the stage. Your confidence seemed off the charts. -laughs- You literally had the highest score in the Posing/Presentation and Model Walk rounds in all your classes. How did you get so good?
CAMBRIA: I’ve been a performer ever since I was six, so being on stage was never an issue for me. But this was my first time being on stage showcasing the effort it takes, to not only have a great stage performance and look, but to also show off my physique which was something I was never exactly comfortable with until this competition. On top of that, I have to give so much credit to my coaches Lorelie and Jason for helping me add some sass to my routine. They put in a lot of effort to help me thrive for this competition mentally. I have to give them a lot of props for that because they made sure that we felt good about ourselves. I think that’s very important, especially in a competition like this where you notice a lot of your weaknesses. But, the upside to it is that you keep going because you are driven by your strengths.
“…THE UPSIDE TO IT IS THAT YOU KEEP GOING BECAUSE YOU ARE DRIVEN BY YOUR STRENGTHS.”
BEN: You were also incredible in the Sports Model division, where you took 1st in Novice. We were all very surprised when you did not reappear for the Open, as you would have surely done very well there also. Where did you get the inspiration for your cheerleader theme, and why did you opt for Novice and not Open?
CAMBRIA: I was a cheerleader in high school, so it only made sense to stick with a sport I was once good at. And, I can’t lie, it felt pretty good attempting to be a cheerleader one more time. I was definitely giving myself throwback vibes. You guys probably wouldn’t believe me if I told you I haven’t kicked or jumped like that in years [laughs].
Being that it was my first time competing, I wasn’t really sure what to expect when it came to the Sports Model division. I knew if I did the Open that I would be going up against people who have done this category before, and totally killed it. So, I just stuck with Novice to feel more confident in myself. Now that it’s over, I do wish I could’ve done Open instead of Novice. But, I know what to expect for my next show and I will have to bring my A-game since I will be going up against some of the greatest.
BEN: So awesome! Well again, I am so honored to have you in the IPL family and so excited about you as a competitor and Pro. There are many people, including myself who feel you are ready to go up against some top IPL Bikini Pros. What is next for you and when will we see you back on the IPL stage?
“I PROMISE THIS WILL NOT BE THE LAST YOU GUYS SEE OF ME.”
CAMBRIA: I plan to make my debut in May of 2019 where I hope to make a comeback stronger than ever! I can’t lie, I am a bit nervous going up against the Pros but I’m excited to see what my transformation will be like the next time around. And, more importantly, I can’t wait to hit the stage with many familiar faces again.
Thank you again for the warm welcome into the IPL Family. This experience and opportunity has been one I will never forget and I am so grateful for all the love and support I received from this league. I promise this will not be the last you guys see of me.
