KAREN BASLER’S PATH TO PRO: THREE’S THE CHARM
INTERVIEW BY BEN YOSEF | MICHAEL BROOKS PHOTOGRAPHY
Karen Basler competed in the IPL NaturalMag Classic in August of 2015, which was the first ever IPL contest event. She looked amazing at that show and placed second in Bikini Open.
Karen then went on to compete in the 2015 IPL North Atlantic Championship the following month. At this show she landed in the second place spot once again. This time right behind first place winner Beth Cote, wo won her IPL Bikini PRO CARD at that show.
Finally, on her third try, at the March 2016 IPL Natural Gainz Magazine Classic Karen placed 1st in Bikini Open, earning her IPL Bikini Pro-Qualified Status.
Basler is a phenomenal athlete, with a heart of gold and a never-give up, never complain attitude that is more than worthy of some special Natural Bikini Magazine attention.
Ben Yosef: About six months have passed since you won your IPL Bikini PRO CARD. And you have actually competed as a PRO and were victorious, becoming the IPL’s first, ever, PRO Bikini Champion. I have personally sang your praises and congratulated you tons but, congrats again! Has all of this success settled in by now?
“With so many strong competitors, I need to keep working hard! No time to look back. Always looking forward!”
Karen Basler: Thanks, Ben! It hasn’t really all settled in! It was a huge honor and accomplishment to be IPL’s first ever Pro Bikini Champion! The honor is especially close to my heart since I also competed in the first EVER IPL contest in August of 2015. It’s been so exciting to be a part of this organization and watch it grow and flourish. However, it’s really just the beginning.
There are so many impressive IPL Bikini Pros as well as those who are training hard to gain Pro status. With so many strong competitors, I need to keep working hard! No time to look back. Always looking forward!
BY: Awesome! Well, you are totally an A-class athlete and I am sure you will hold your own and even excel on the IPL PRO Bikini stage. It took you three attempts to earn your IPL Bikini PRO CARD. What do you think made the difference with what you brought to the stage in NYC, compared to your two previous outings?
KB: My posing and presentation coach, Janet Marsico of The Figure Workshop, and I worked a lot on transitions, hitting my actual poses, and also the evening walk. You told me as head judge at the show before, where I took second place, that I needed to nail the model walk. So, I practiced as much as I could.
Additionally, my trainer, Demetrious Whitfield of Wilton Sport and Fitness, had me continuously training, and we stepped up my conditioning too. Having a strength and conditioning coach as a trainer, he especially wants his athletes to win that conditioning round!
BY: Awesome! Well, team Basler really brought the goods! What would you say your strengths are? And what do you think you need to continue to focus on as you progress in your journey as a Pro Bikini Athlete? Do you have any weak points that need more attention?
“I have many things that I would like to work on but I’m always trying to sculpt those bikini glutes!”
KB: Well, Demetrious always says I have strong legs. Maybe from all these years of playing tennis my legs have more of an athletic definition, than a bodybuilding one. I have many things that I would like to work on but I’m always trying to sculpt those bikini glutes!
BY: What is your game plan for bringing up those glutes?
KB: Lots of squats, glute bridges, and hill sprints!
BY: Awesome! Well, with your drive and passion for training, I am sure you will achieve what you are after! Quite a lot has happened in your life since you won your IPL PRO CARD. Of course, couple months later you went on to win your first PRO show at the IPL New Jersey PRO. Then a few months after that you and your family moved from Connecticut to Florida. How are things going for you and your family in the new state? And has this move affected your training?
KB: Yes, indeed, things have been quite busy! We are still getting settled here in Florida but we all love it. I have been working out, although I’m still trying to find a gym. I miss my posing coach and trainer but there is always texting and Skype.
My husband and children are always my first priority so I have been focusing on them right now. I pride myself on maintaining a good balance in my life. I miss the stage and can’t wait to compete again!
BY: Awesome! You are such an amazing person and a wonderful ambassador to this sport. I wish you the very best in your new Florida environment and can’t wait to see you back on the IPL stage!
KB: Thanks, Ben! That means a lot coming from you. I am looking forward to improving my physique and being on the IPL stage again! I saw that the IPL will be in Florida in 2017. I can’t wait! NATURAL BIKINI
