The Bikini division was stacked at the 2017 2nd Annual IPL Southwest Grand Prix Pro/Am in Phoenix, AZ. Even so, one competitor owned the division.
It had been about a year and a half since Bikini Athlete Glenda McFarlane stepped foot on an IPL stage. Her last time being her IPL debut at the May 2016 California Championship, in Sacramento, CA. At that contest she placed 3rd in Bikini Mommas (3 to 5), 1st in Bikini Novice Class A, and 3rd in Bikini Masters 40+. At that contest she did not enter Bikini Open.
In Phoenix, Glenda would enter both Masters 40+ and Open. Starting with Masters 40+ Glenda McFarlane dominated, winning all six scored categories: Muscularity, Symmetry, Conditioning, Posing & Presentation, Suit, and Model Walk at Finals. And, in the process, earning a very impressive 209 points (out of 240 max), 1st place and her IPL Bikini Masters Pro Card. Shout out to Claire Sime (2nd) and Kirsten Eastvold-Hanson (3rd) who rounded out the top three.
“…Glenda was able to pull ahead earning the Overall title, with a priceless look of surprise at the announcement.”
Then, it was on to the Masters Overall. Here, Glenda McFarlane would face Masters 60+ winner Victoria Nash and 50+ winner Lisa Barnes. In the end, Glenda took the Overall Bikini Masters title.
Next came the Open. The competition would ratchet up, as Glenda battled it out in Open Class A. In this class Glenda would take four of the six scored categories: Muscularity, Symmetry, Conditioning, and Posing & Presentation. However, a hard charging Bridget Troxell tied with Glenda in Suit, and won the Model Walk round at Finals.
That being said, those four rounds were enough to earn Glenda McFarlane 1st place honors and IPL Bikini Pro Card, as she bested her Masters score earning 211 points. Shout out to Bridgett Troxell (2nd) and Carrie Cuellar (3rd) who rounded out the top three. Then it was on to the Overall Open.
In the Open Overall, Glenda would face Open Class B winner Michelle Alexander. Alexander, a stellar competitor as well, pushed Glenda to the max in the final pose down to determine the Overall Bikini Open Champion. In the end, Glenda was able to pull ahead earning the Overall title, with a priceless look of surprise at the announcement. Glenda McFarlane makes a very nice addition to the very competitive group of elite IPL Pro Bikini Athletes.
BEN YOSEF: Glenda! Congrats on taking it all, like literally, at the Grand Prix! [laughs] How does it feel being an IPL Pro?
“…IN AN EFFORT TO KEEP MY ANSWER SHORT, I’M FLYING HIGH! LIKE CLOUD NINE STATUS!”
GLENDA MCFARLANE: Thank you, Ben! You know, I have everything I need in life. Everything that really matters, that is. And I’m trying to remember really wanting something that’s non essential. I can’t remember wanting something more than winning IPL PRO status. And, in my wildest dreams, I would’ve loved to take an Overall win. So, when it actually happened for me that night in October, well, in an effort to keep my answer short, I’m flying high! Like cloud nine status!
BEN: That’s so awesome. [laughs] Well, you were amazing. I have to ask you about those crazy quads… those things are so poppin’. What’s the story behind them?
“…I DON’T JUST TRAIN MY QUADS. I DEFINITELY STAY AWAY FROM LEG EXTENSIONS. AND YET THESE QUADS STILL WANT TO STEAL THE SHOW!”
GLENDA: I wish I could take all the credit. Good genes plays a big part. With that said, I still train my lower body three times a week because I need my glutes to catch up to my quads. Back Squats, Bulgarian Split Squats, Deadlifts, Hip Thrusts and Glute Kickbacks are a mainstay in my regimen.
Mind body connection is key, and if I’m feeling that an exercise is giving my quads a hit more than my posterior chain I change the move. Long story short, I don’t just train my quads. I definitely stay away from leg extensions. And yet these quads still want to steal the show! Crazy huh? That’s why I love this sport. It’s an art!
BEN: I hear ya! Well, you are still pretty strong from the back as well. When looking at you all from the back in your classes, you definitely stood out.
GLENDA: In the middle of prep… and I swear I was the hardest worker in the weight room… and you’re doin’ hip thrusts and people are looking at you funny cuz it’s an awkward looking exercise. Let’s be honest, sometimes you can’t help but wonder! Is this really working? Is it making a difference? And I can tell you, honestly, this compliment… hearing those words out of your mouth. Well, I’m humbled. Best compliment EVER!
“SEPTEMBER 2018, I’M THERE! AND, I CANNOT WAIT! I’M EXCITED! I LOVE THIS SPORT, AND I LOVE IPL!”
BEN: Aweee, well it’s true! So, perhaps your toughest fight at the Grand Prix was for the Overall between you and Michelle Alexander. How were you feeling heading into the Overall?
GLENDA: I was feeling confident because I took Overall in Masters, and yet at the same time I was completely unsure. She’s a fierce competitor. Great physique and she’s beautiful. And, I’ve always had this crazy notion that a short girl could never win Overall Open. That it always goes to the tall girl. Silly huh? Must be some old childhood memories of always feeling like all the tall girls win at everything! [laughs] Anyhow, I was genuinely and beyond pleasantly surprised to take it! I’ve got issues! [laughs]
BEN: Well, you took it! [laughs] I am excited to see you at the Pro level now! When can we expect to see you back on the IPL stage? Making your Pro Bikini Debut…
GLENDA: I’m traveling in April, so I don’t think I’ll be ready in May. September 2018, I’m there! And, I cannot wait! I’m gonna have to work harder with posing, specifically being ready for the T Walk! I’m signed up for some coaching for posing, so let’s see how that pans out. I’m excited! I love this sport, and I love IPL!
BEN: Well, I look forward to having you on that IPL Pro stage! And thank you! IPL loves you! [laughs] Any final thoughts?
GLENDA: I appreciate you and IPL! First class natural federation!
