IPL APEX MASTERS PRO BIKINI CHAMPION, TAWNYA CLINE
Interview By IPL Pro Beth Cote | Michael Brooks Photography
Bikini History was made at 2016 APEX, the IPL’s pinnacle year-end championship event, in Los Angeles, CA on November 12th.
A month prior, top Bikini Masters Pro, Tawnya Cline faced-off against top Bikini Masters Pro, Ivonne Grecco at the IPL West Coast Pro in Rancho Cordova, CA. This was the very first time the IPL hosted a Pro Bikini Masters division. At that contest Grecco pulled ahead and placed 1st, becoming the IPL’s first ever Pro Bikini Masters Champion.
At APEX, Grecco and Cline would meet again. However, this time the tables were turned. Both athletes are consummate professionals and very competitive. But, in LA, Cline was determined to redeem herself. And redeem she did, as she clenched the win to become the IPL’s first ever APEX PRO Bikini Masters Champion. >>>
BETH COTE: This was the first year we’ve held an APEX, year-end event. What was your take on the venue and how it was run?
TAWNYA CLINE: I am from the Los Angeles area, so I was happy to return back to my home town. It was fun to be back in the city. The venue was great. Nice and cozy. It was different having it three stories, and I’d be fibbing if I told you I wasn’t getting lost every time I tried to relocate. It kept excitement in the day! It was also right after they announced Trump as President, so being in the mix of the city kept it interesting.
BETH: Knowing that all the athletes had to qualify to even compete in this show, did you change anything about your prep?
TAWNYA: I actually practice a healthy, active lifestyle daily, so nothing changes with my prep. I just take the goals I am working towards for me personally and my previous feedback to bring a better package to each competition.
BETH: How did it feel to win Professional Masters Bikini at APEX?
“I SET THAT GOAL THE MOMENT APEX WAS ADDED TO THE COMPETITION CALENDAR… THIS IS WHAT I WORK SO HARD ALL YEAR LONG FOR.”
TAWNYA: I set that goal the moment APEX was added to the competition calendar. I love being a part of the year-end pinnacles. This is what I work so hard all year-long for. I knew going into it that I had done my absolute best and that is truly all I can ask of myself. I felt so honored to be there in the first place and blessed to share the stage with some of the top IPL Bikini Athletes.
BETH: Unlike events in Arizona, you had to travel a while to get to LA. What are some of your tips for other competitors planning to travel to compete? Any special tricks or items you can’t go without?
TAWNYA: I like to arrive a day before all the excitement starts. This way I have a day to chill and have “me time”. It eliminates stress and allows time to grab things I may still need. I always take time to go through my items and act as if I am going through the motions, so nothing is missed.
“I CANNOT GO WITHOUT MY FOOD! I JUST DON’T TRUST EATING OUT SO CLOSE TO MY COMPETITIONS.”
I actually drove to this event and I find that a bit easier. I have no limits on what I can bring. I can have plenty of space for food and photo shoot items. When I fly, it can take a bit more planning. I cannot go without my FOOD! I just don’t trust eating out so close to my competitions. I work so hard all year long, so I love having control of how my food is prepped.
With that being said, I always bring my Salad Master Pan. It plugs in the wall. Everything can cook at once, and it cooks on a low heat, keeping all nutrients in the food, and requires no stirring or flipping. It has saved my life!!!
BETH: What are your plans for competition this year? Are you hoping to qualify and compete at the APEX again?
“2017 APEX WILL BE THE ONE I WILL SHOOT FOR IN ALL THREE DIVISIONS.”
TAWNYA: I plan to compete in Texas in August for my first show of the year. I also plan to do the competition in Tahiti that my teammate promotes, and of course California in the fall to defend my title as Sports Model Pro.
As far as APEX, I am qualified in Masters Bikini by winning the title in 2016. I plan to debut in Pro Masters Evening Gown and qualify in that, as well as Sports Model. I am sure of the competitions I am doing, however not certain of the divisions for each yet. I really like to win, so I need to be confident that multiple divisions will not distract me.
2017 APEX will be the one I will shoot for in all three divisions. Thank you so much for the interview! I look forward to a great 2017 with the IPL! BIKINI
