CUSTOM FITNESS WITH IPL BIKINI BEAUTY, ALMA ELIZABETH!
Interview by Ben Yosef | Michael Brooks Photography
Alma Elizabeth was pretty fantastic at her IPL debut, which took place at the 2017 3rd Annual Midwest Championship on April 15th in Madison, WI.
Placing a very respectable 3rd in Bikini Open, Alma’s highest scores were in Symmetry, Conditioning, Suit and Model Walk at Finals. When all the scores came in, Alma was just four points short of taking 2nd.
I caught up with her a few months after the show to find out more about this Bikini Beauty, what got her into the sport, and get her perspective on Bikini Competition. >>>>
►”I WAS A GIRL JUST TRYING TO BE SKINNY AND HAD LIVED A LIFE WITH AN UNDIAGNOSED EATING DISORDER.”
BEN YOSEF: How did you get your start in competing and what attracted you to it?
ALMA ELIZABETH: In January of 2016 I started to look into finding myself a coach to potentially compete. I had seen a few people around my area competing, and I thought that it was something I could do. I mean I worked out, so how hard could it be? Well, needless to say, competing had a much deeper meaning than just completing something on a “Bucket List.”
The confidence these women gained and showcased was something I had been trying so hard to find. I was not confident, I was not happy with my current state of HOURS of working out, and “dieting”, (low fat, fat free, no carb, low carb, LOTS of protein and my body was not ever changing). I was in a state of binge-eating for a day and not eating for 2-3 days. I was a girl just trying to be skinny and had lived a life with an undiagnosed eating disorder.
I knew that something had to change if I wanted to be healthy and giving myself this goal was something I had to do for my son and myself. I wanted my son to have a mom, a mom who was healthy and happy. In this journey I gained self-love and confidence, and that was one of the biggest things that attracted me to the sport.
BEN: How would you describe Custom Fitness and what does it mean to you?
▼ “CUSTOM FITNESS ISN’T JUST ABOUT SHAPING YOUR BODY FOR THE STAGE, IT’S ABOUT SHAPING YOUR MIND AND SOUL.”
- F- Family
Custom Fitness means family. I say that because family means no one gets left behind. Family means that everyone has each other’s back. In this sport and journey that people embark upon you need a support system to be able to have a good experience and succeed. Custom Fitness has helped me in this journey by introducing me to my second family. A group of strong, passionate, and loving individuals who want nothing more than to see you grow and succeed!
Custom Fitness isn’t just about shaping your body for the stage, it’s about shaping your mind and soul. After embarking on this journey with Custom Fitness Specialists, I have grown to be a stronger, more confident, sassy, and healthy mother, woman, and friend. I have not only gained all those qualities and so much more, but I have gained another family.
BEN: Who do you admire or look up to, in the sport or outside of it?
ALMA: The person I most admire in this sport is the woman who took a chance. The woman who set out to do something and changed her whole lifestyle in order to succeed. I admire every woman who puts herself first for a part of their life in order to grow and become a healthier, happier version of themselves.
►“EACH PERSON THAT SETS OUT TO COMPETE THAT I HAVE MET HAS HAD A STORY TO TELL… SOMETHING TO WORK THROUGH OR WORK TOWARDS.”
BEN: What’s the best part about competing?
ALMA: The best part about competing is the people you meet in and out of the sport. I have found more high quality friends in this sport than I have found in my life. Each person that sets out to compete that I have met has had a story to tell. They have had something they were trying to work through or work towards. The people in this sport support you and challenge you.
BEN: What’s the worst part about competing?
ALMA: The worst part of competing would have to be creating a new lifestyle. The new choices one must make can take a toll on friendships and relationships. People who truly believe in you and love you will have your back no matter what! They will be there for the workouts, the meal prep Sunday’s, the late nights and early mornings, the phone calls, they will let you smell their “Treats” [smiles] the day of the show. I have lost many friends during this journey, but have gained new friendships with common goals and desires.
BEN: What advice would you give girls who are considering competing?
►“COMPETING IS AN UNBELIEVABLY AMAZING FEELING WHEN YOU GET ON STAGE AND THE ROAD TO THE STAGE IS EXHAUSTING, FUN, AND EXHILARATING.”
ALMA: If you are considering competing, make sure you have a solid support system to help you with the journey to the stage, whether it be a team, friends, or family. Having someone alongside of you makes it that much more fun and easy. Competing is an unbelievably amazing feeling when you get on stage and the road to the stage is exhausting, fun, and exhilarating. You will never regret putting in all the hard work and having your friends and family witness all of your changes during the journey!
As far as the judges at your shows…when they critique you, they are not trying to tear you down, but to give you positive feedback in order to grow and be successful in this sport. Take what they say with a grain of salt and work on it. P.S. ALWAYS PRACTICE POSING! The more you practice, the more confident you are, and the more you shine on stage.
BEN: When will we see you back on the IPL stage? And are there other IPL divisions you are interested in?
ALMA: I plan on debuting my new physique to the IPL stage in July of 2018. I have been competing and in prep for a little over 19 months and am going to take a long building season. I would be interested in competing in Woman’s Athletic Open as well as Bikini Open.
BEN: Any parting words for Natural Bikini Magazine readers?
ALMA: If you decide to compete in the world of Natural Bodybuilding, find a team. Having people who believe in you and are pushing you to be your best will forever change you in the best way possible! Reach out, ask questions, and love the process!
BEN: Where can readers find out more about you?
ALMA: Readers can find me on Facebook and Instagram, I do the majority of my posting on my Instagram and will be putting more information on my public page. Instagram @alma_fit_life25. BIKINI
